Applying for a Secondary School for September 2017

Applying for Secondary Schools September 2017

The process for applying for a secondary school for your child will begin later this year. Starting secondary school is a big step for children and can be an anxious time for all those involved. This leaflet gives you a broad outline of the timetable and what actually happens.

This information is being sent out before the process starts and should be treated as guidance only.

The Guide to Secondary Schools in Enfield information brochure will be available online for all families at the beginning of September at www.enfield.gov.uk/admissions

Online Applications

We ask that all parents make an online application for a school place. The online portal can be accessed via this link: www.enfield.gov.uk/admissions. The portal will be open for online applications from 1 September 2016 through to 31 October 2016. You can make changes to your preferences throughout the application period but please ensure that you follow the instructions to resubmit any amendments made.

Which children will transfer to secondary school in 2017?

Children born between 1.9.05 and 31.8.06 will be transferring to secondary school in September 2017. If your child has a Education Health Care Plan or a Statement of Special Educational Needs, the SEN Services Team will contact you to explain the process for transfer as the arrangements for your child will be different.

How the system works

Parents are invited to nominate up to six preferences either in Enfield or outside the borough. All preferences must be included in your application and ranked in preference order, even if the school is outside the London Borough of Enfield. This is very important because only one offer will be made and this will be the highest preference school for which your child has qualified under the admission arrangements.

It is important to remember that only applying for one school will not improve your chances of getting a place.

If a place cannot be offered at any of the schools you have asked for your child will be allocated a place at a school with a vacancy. We would therefore encourage you to include a local school in your list of preferences.

If you live outside Enfield, you must apply through the borough in which you are living. You should contact your home authority to request the application pack or visit their website.

How to apply

• You should apply online at www.enfield.gov.uk/admissions - we would suggest you register your details as early as possible in September. You can make your application at a later date but before 31 October 2016.

• Visit as many schools as possible. The dates for the schools opening evenings are detailed on the back page of this leaflet.

• Check the admissions criteria for each school you are interested in.

• Make sure you register on time if you want your child to sit for schools with selection tests. In Enfield the schools this affects are Enfield Grammar, Kingsmead and The Latymer. Details of the arrangements for these schools are published on each schools website.

• After you have visited the schools on their open evening and decided which ones you want to apply for, complete your application with up to six school preferences. Please make sure you rank them in your true preference order. You must include all the schools you wish to apply for, even if they are outside the borough of Enfield.

• If you are applying for a school that requires you to complete a supplementary information form, these forms must be returned to the schools directly by the specified date. The Enfield schools that require a supplementary form are: Bishop Stopford’s CE, Enfield Grammar (sport or music applications only), Kingsmead (performance only) St. Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls, St. Ignatius College and The Latymer .

If you are applying for schools outside of Enfield you should contact the relevant local authority for information about schools in their area. They will be able to let you know which schools require a supplementary information form to be completed.

How offers will be made

All preferences listed will be considered by the relevant admission authority. If the number of applications received for a school exceeds the number of available places, the oversubscription criteria (rules) will be used to decide which children are eligible to be offered a place. If your child is eligible for more than one of the schools you have requested, your child will be offered a place at the school which was ranked higher in your application. All lower ranking preferences are then withdrawn.

All online applicants will receive an email during the evening of 1 March 2017, National Offer Day, advising you of the outcome. You will be able to accept the school offered online as well.

How the allocation process works

It is not possible to predict how many applications will be received for each school. The booklet which will be available in September will have information about admission to the community schools in the Borough for the previous year.

Most parents will be offered a place at a school they are happy with. However, this is not always the case and some families are disappointed with the outcome of their application. If this is the case, further information will be sent to you in March.

It is important that you understand the way in which places are allocated at secondary schools. If you have any queries please either:

• Talk to your child’s primary school;

• Read the Guide to Secondary Schools brochure which will be available in September.

• Attend one of the information sessions that will be held in September.

• Contact the Enfield Schools Admission Service.
