Parent Support and Voice

Once every half term we organise coffee mornings for the parents and their children. We use this time to listen to the parents about any concerns or support they may need. We also use the time to train the parents and help them develop skills they may need to help their child/children at home.

Below are a few photographs from different coffee mornings which show the parents and children learning- Makaton, Colourful Semantics, and dance, drama and song through stories.

Miss Alkan ran a coffee morning for parents and children in the EYFS, teaching them how to make their own play dough. Children and parents then participated in a Dough Gym session. Play dough is an easy resource to make and is perfect for children to develop the muscles in their hands and arms. Dough Gym is a daily session conducted at Eldon where children listen to music and do hand, finger, palm, arm and shoulder workouts with play dough to help develop their fine and gross motor skills.

Simple play dough recipe:

  • 2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 /2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in until it feels just right)
  • food colouring (optional)

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl

Add food colouring to the boiling water then pour into the dry ingredients

Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky dough

Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone.

(If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right)
